The microphone question

Everything else in this Academy tells you that sound matters more than picture. For ASMR, sound is the picture. The microphone is not equipment, it is the thing people came for.

Which also means the general audio advice needs adjusting — and one piece of it needs throwing out entirely.

Ignore the noise suppression advice

The standard streaming setup says: switch on noise suppression, add a gate, and compress. For ASMR, the first two of those will ruin you.

  • Noise suppression is trained to remove quiet, steady, non-speech sound. Brushing, tapping at low volume, breath, the texture of a fabric — that is precisely what it removes. It cannot tell the difference between your trigger and a fan.
  • A noise gate mutes the microphone when nothing is above a threshold. Half of ASMR is below any threshold you would set. Gates chop the tails off sounds, which is the part people are listening for.

So: no suppression, no gate. Which means the room itself has to be quiet, and that is the next chapter.

A gentle compressor is still fine and usually helpful — it stops the loud trigger after a quiet one from being a shock. Keep the ratio low.

Binaural or not

Binaural means two microphones, roughly a head's width apart, so that a sound on your left arrives at the left capsule slightly earlier and louder. Played back on headphones, the listener places it in space — which is a large part of why ASMR works at all.

You do not need a dedicated ear-shaped rig to get it. Three routes, in increasing cost:

  • One good microphone. Mono, no spatial effect, and still completely viable. A great many popular ASMR channels are mono. Trigger quality beats spatial positioning.
  • Two matched microphones on a bar. Real stereo, most of the effect, and you can buy the second one later. Match them: two of the same model, or the imaging will feel lopsided.
  • A purpose-built binaural head with silicone ears. The full effect, including ear-specific triggers that only work when there is an ear to work on. Expensive, and worth it only once you know you are doing this seriously.

Whichever you pick, headphone listening is the assumption. Say so in your panels. A viewer on laptop speakers is getting maybe a third of what you made.

Gain, distance and the thing everyone gets wrong

The general audio chapter says get close and turn the gain down. For ASMR the first half still applies, the second half does not.

You are recording sounds that are genuinely, physically quiet, so you will be running much more gain than a gaming streamer — and that means the noise floor of your microphone, your interface and your room becomes audible. This is the actual limiting factor in most ASMR setups, and it is why people conclude they need a better microphone when they usually need a quieter room.

Practical settings:

  • Set levels on your loudest trigger, not your whispering. The one clap of a prop that clips is the one people remember.
  • Leave real headroom. Peaks around two thirds of the meter. Quiet-to-loud range is enormous in ASMR and clipping is unrecoverable.
  • Do not ride the fader mid-trigger. Set it and stay consistent; viewers adjust their own volume once and expect it to hold.

What to buy, in order

  1. A quiet room. Free, and it outperforms every purchase below. See the next chapter.
  2. A stand that does not transmit desk vibration. Shock mount, boom arm, anything that separates the microphone from the surface you are tapping on. Nothing is more frustrating than a perfect trigger with a thud under it.
  3. An audio interface with clean preamps, if you are on XLR. Cheap gain is noisy gain, and you are using a lot of it.
  4. A second matched microphone, if you want stereo.
  5. A binaural head, last, and only if the channel is established.

Check it the way your audience hears it

Record two minutes: your quietest trigger, your loudest, and a whisper. Then listen on headphones, at the volume a person lying in bed would use — which is much lower than your monitoring volume.

Listen for: hiss under the quiet parts, a click when your gate would have been (if you left one on), any thud from the desk, and whether the loud trigger made you flinch. Fix one, repeat next month.
